The Internet backbone refers to the principal data routes between large, strategically interconnected networks and core routers in the Internet. These data routes are hosted by commercial, government, academic and other high-capacity network centers, the Internet exchange points and network access points, that interchange Internet traffic between the countries, continents and across the oceans of the world. Traffic interchange between the Internet service providers, often Tier 1 networks, participating in the Internet backbone exchange traffic by privately negotiated interconnection agreements, primarily governed by the principle of settlement-free peering.

Architectural principles

The Internet and consequently its backbone networks do not rely on central control or coordinating facilities, nor do they implement any global network policies. The resilience of the Internet results from its principal architectural features, most notably the idea of placing as little as possible network state and control functions in the network elements, but instead relying on the endpoints of communication to handle most of the processing to ensure data integrity, reliability, and authentication. In addition, the high degree of redundancy of today's network links and sophisticated real-time routing protocols provide alternate paths of communications for load balancing and congestion avoidance.

What is the best way to design a network that contains a fibre optic backbone, 4 subnets and and net access?
Q. I currently have a fibre optic backbone connected to the internet through a dmz. THere are two hubs on the backbone, each connected to a router. Each router then connects to 2 switches which will eventually make a total of 4 subnets containing computers and printers. Am i using the right network devices here? Ok, i have a DMZ sitting in between the internal network and the internet to provide security. In the DMZ is a web server, email server and a Remote access server with a firewall sitting infront of it keeping unwanted users out from the internet Could i put the two routers onto the backbone, then connect the switches to these routers to create my subnets.(i thiink thats what you were suggesting) Im going to use private ip… [cont.]

A. First, what do you mean by connecting through a DMZ. A DMZ is a "Demilitarized Zone" and it refers to the part of your network that is not protected by a firewall. Also, if you have 2 routers (with or without switches built in?) and 2 switches you can probably get rid of the hubs altogether. Hubs are not good for implementation of networks these days as they are "dumb" networking devices. It sounds like a star topology would suit you well. Bring the fibre backbone in to the strongest router, then route all the data to the appropriate subnet from there. Theres alot more factors that you did not express in your question. What block of IPs are you getting from your ISP? Are you using NAT for the internal addresses? What is the internal… [cont.]

questions about internet security and spam/viruses etc.?
Q. so, im not the most technology savvy guy, i know my way around some programs but you know, average. i was listening to a lecture about viruses and it caught my attention. the speaker was talking about people out there (in the internet world) who make worms and viruses etc. and release them into the internet, which brings about my 1st question? 1: how do people even get worms into the internet, now, i know it may seem childish but when i hear that i imagine a worm as being like an airborne virus, the internet being all the air and your random searching being you accidentally running into it while going through a DNS or whatever? so, i know that's not right, the internet is just light being sent through a cable and being read as 1's and 0's [cont.]

A. 1. they get worms through email and stuff like that, once the attachment is opened, you done for 2. email, they go for personal info and work silently 3. they would use the microsoft website and probably tell users for example" The new ___ program just came out! Download it here!" which the hacker is actually luring people into viruses and rogues. 4. the internet/government owns the servers. They are one of the most important things because they hold all info for companies to sort and without we wouldn't have computers. 4.1 hacking them would be a challenge but they would have to have extreme program and government technology to do that. And I would false people into fake programs muhahahahaha! 4.2 They get past security like for… [cont.]
