From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In the context of spaceflight, a satellite is an object which has been placed into orbit by human endeavor. Such objects are sometimes called artificial satellites to distinguish them from natural satellites such as the Moon. The first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. By 2009 thousands of satellites have been launched into orbit around the Earth. These originate from more than 50 countries and have used the satellite launching capabilities of ten nations. A few hundred satellites are currently operational, whereas thousands of unused satellites and satellite fragments orbit the Earth as space debris. A few space probes have been placed into orbit around other bodies and become artificial satellites to the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Satellites are used for a large number of purposes. Common types include military (spy) and civilian Earth observation satellites, communication satellites, navigation satellites, weather satellites, and research satellites. Space stations and human spacecraft in orbit are also satellites. Satellite orbits vary greatly, depending on the purpose of the satellite, and are classified in a number of ways. Well-known (overlapping) classes include low Earth orbit, polar orbit, and geostationary orbit. Satellites are usually semi-independent computer controlled systems. Satellite subsystems attend many tasks, such as power generation, thermal control, telemetry, attitude control and orbit control. HistoryFrom Wikipedia under the

And can you catch a lot of tv channels from Australia if you are in Europe depending on your satellite dish and receiver? Asked by kiko s - Sun Dec 9 05:32:40 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. "What is the biggest satellite dish that is available so I can catch a lot of channels from around the world? " I would say 12ft (3.6 meter) dish , is your best bet. Solid unperforated is better , but if it is the mesh type make sure the holes are smaller than the width of a pencil so you can receive Ku signals. "And If you have a satellite tv dish can the computer and internet help you to catch even more tv channels" Good question , and Yes the computer can help in several ways , by using the Internet to look at sites such as Lyngsat where you can find updated info on new frequencies and channels. Q. This question is concerning law and bootlegging satellite signal. I can understand if someone gets fined for stealing Cable TV because in order to do so they would have to physically take a wire that they do not own, and re-direct it on to their property. However, satellites are very different. Satellite signals are being blasted down on to our houses whether we like it or not. How can we call it "stealing" a satellite signal if all we're doing is collecting a signal that is already being blasted at our houses? So can anyone actually get charged for stealing a satellite signal? Perdendosi That's an interesting point, but I don't think decrypting cell signals are is the same as Sat waves. If your smart enough to pluck it out of the air without being caught, go for it, I see no harm in taking raido waves that are already hitting your house, and using them. Q. Hi, i live in Jefferson, Texas(just east of Dallas) i have no other choices for internet besides satellite and the phone company i use. The phone company i use charges 50 dollars a month just for dial up speed without having to dial up... So i was looking at satellite providers and i wanted to know if anyone could show me the cheapest and most reliable providers? (NOT DISH, BLUEWIRE, or hughes net. they charge $200 up front for service) Thanks in advance! Asked by tulowiecki331 - Wed Aug 20 19:04:54 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know how cheap you're thinking satellite internet is, but it almost always is going to cost more than cable and dsl. Most reliable would probably be HughesNet and WildBlue. Maybe you could get dial-up? And if you decide on dial-up, I would say NetZero is the best.
